Échange de Pots
2023 Montreuil

I met Inès on an online sales platform in spring 2022.
At that time, I was looking to replace my small plastic pots—the ones that housed the growth of my young cuttings—with small terracotta pots, ideally secondhand. It turned out that Inès was selling a few, and they weren't very expensive. So, once the deal was digitally concluded, I went to her place to pick them up.
I arrived at the given address, at the back of a courtyard on the ground floor, facing an open door, and entered her small apartment.
I looked around: the studio, quite dark, consisted of just a single room, simply furnished with a convertible bed and a small kitchenette. Inès's gaze struck me—there was something of a serene fragility mixed with a certain gentleness. Modestly, she presented the pots to me, saying: "Here they are."
While taking the few small pots of different sizes, I noticed a framed photograph on the wall: on the left side of the image, a close-up of the lower part of a naked woman's body, turned against a tree trunk. On the right side, the arm of a man in a suit moving toward her. On a bedside table below, there was that book, "Jouissance Club"(1), which I had read that year.
I feel increasingly intrigued by Inès, which leads me to question her about this photograph. We exchange until we begin talking about photography in general.
Back home, energized by this encounter, I can't help but write a message to Inès, telling her about the book I saw at her place. I can't help but allude to it in a text, proposing that we meet again: an exchange of skins perhaps this time?
As synchronicity would have it, during the same period, I was discussing with my psychoanalyst the boundaries of self and those we set with others, and thus those that had defined me until then. Moving inwardly, seeking to understand the origins of this behavior, I came to think that this last allusion was one too many.
So I reflected and decided to write to her apologizing, and proposed continuing our exchange, which she accepted. At our second meeting, over a drink, I told her of my desire to photograph her, though I wasn't sure how.
She told me in turn that she photographs herself, and showed me her work of nude self-portraits.
I went home and a year later, I proposed to her that we tell this story in images. Like images of the psyche reinterpreted.
It was with great joy that she agreed to pose with me. I bought two academic nylon dance unitards to cover our bodies with a second skin, neutral, protective.
I wanted to create images of layered transparency, using the technique I usually employ for this purpose: superimposing images at the moment of capture with my medium format film camera, as in some of my previous portrait series(2), as if to illustrate a phantasmatic state of the psyche, like a past action inscribed in the transparency of memory.
But my approach did not succeed. Led astray during the preparation of the studio shoot, I made a mistake with the color of the studio backdrop paper. The person renting me the space kindly offered me a dark-colored background, but for my technique to work, I would have needed to use a white or very light background. This detail, unfortunately overlooked, therefore did not allow for the desired effect.
A Freudian slip? Inevitably! Because this "psycho-photographic" act, conducted in the manner of Alejandro Jodorowsky's "Psycho-magical" acts**, was simply for me an attempt to imprint my psyche: marked by this action, this "photograph" becomes an act that transforms into an awakening, of the boundaries one must set for oneself and for others. To mark them clearly and sharply on photographic film was actually the way to have them concretely exist in my subconscious.
